Organize a Conversation for Campus Sustainability Day
How are you preparing students for a changing climate?

We want to hear from you -  what is your campus, region, or state doing to preparing students through educational opportunities for the changing climate, society, and economy?  Organize a regional or on-campus conversation by following the steps below.

Each conversation will three core questions to guide their discussion, and the notes from these conversations will be compiled into a national guiding document at the end of Campus Sustainability Day
(all conversations should be completed by the end of October 2012).

Follow the steps below to become a part of the national dialogue.  Questions? Contact us.

Step One: Recruit Participants

Host an on-campus conversation
Contact your institution's administrators, provost, president, faculty, student groups, and community organizations to join you in the conversation.  Be sure to secure a space and time on campus early to host your conversation, and advertise broadly!

Or, host a regional conversation
  • Check to see if you can participate in one of the regional conversations hosted by our partner organizations.
  • Still want to create your own?  We recommend using an interactive platform to host a regional event virtually, such as Google+ Hangouts.  Click here for more information about Google+ Hangouts, including how to broadcast your conversation on your school's Youtube channel.  If you are using a video platform to communicate, we recommend no more than 5 campuses participate at a time for the highest quality interaction. You can also use a conference call service or other platform that all participants can use to interact.  Be creative! Once you have decided on a platform, invite other campuses in your region to participate in the dialogue.

Step Two: Register Your Event

Register your event on the AASHE Calendar so others can join, and so that we have a record of all the events happening on this historical day!  Even if you are hosting a conversation for your campus only, please register remember to your event.

Step Three: Host the Conversation

Be creative and specific.  Think big.  Allow for participation from all attendees, and focus on finding solutions.  Your conversations can lead to new ideas, new connections, and better solutions for students' education and preparedness to lead a just and sustainable society.

Use these questions to guide the conversation:
  1. What is your college/region doing to prepare students for a changing climate?
  2. Where do challenges still exist for your campus/region in creating successful sustainability and climate programs, and what are the solutions to these challenges?
  3. How can your campus/region ensure that all students acquire the skills and education necessary to prepare for a changing climate, society, and economy, regardless of their course of study or career goals?

What is your commitment? At the end of your conversation, is your campus ready to make a commitment?  What does your campus commit to doing in order to ensure students are prepared for a changing climate?  Campuses/regions are encouraged to make a tangible commitment for next steps at the end of the conversation.  These commitments will be used as part of the Best Practices document that student leaders will create following the events.

Step Four: Submit Your Notes

Be sure to have your student liaison submit your notes after the event.  Students will be asked to submit notes for each of the guiding questions, and text for a commitment if your group has made one.  In November and December 2012, these student liaisons will work with Second Nature to produce the final guiding document from all national conversations after Campus Sustainability Day 2012, "Best Practices for Preparing Students for a Changing Climate."
