2020 Strategic Plan
New Directions for Second Nature
Second Nature has played a critical role in mobilizing higher education to move the needle towards the goal of a sustainable society. We created and oversee the largest voluntary carbon neutrality commitment in any sector in the United States. Millions of students have passed through these schools and this history has placed Second Nature in a key leadership position working with higher education to advance sustainability. We believe our 2020 Strategic Plan represents a new, catalytic phase of Second Nature’s development. Anchored in clarified mission and vision statements, this plan sets out five key objectives designed to build broader and deeper levels of sustainability impact both on and off campuses. The five objectives are structured to ensure that Second Nature and its programmatic offerings continue to be seen as the leading edge of what is possible within higher education. Read more »

Since 1993, Second Nature has worked with thousands of faculty and administrators at colleges and universities to help make the principles of sustainability fundamental to every aspect of higher education. Today, we share an updated mission and vision for Second Nature, which honors our legacy while refining our focus: to proactively build a sustainable and positive global future through initiating bold commitments, scaling successful actions, and accelerating innovative solutions among leadership networks in higher education. Climate Leadership Awards
Deadline Extended
The 6th annual Second Nature Climate Leadership Awards recognize innovative and advanced leadership in sustainability, climate mitigation, and resilience at signatory campuses of the ACUPCC. This year, Second Nature is partnering with the U.S. Green Building Council’s (USGBC) Center for Green Schools. Award winners will be recognized as part of the 2015 Greenbuild Leadership Awards Program on November 19 in Washington, DC. Applications due by May 22, 2015 11:59 p.m. PDT. Read more »

Second Nature
Second Nature works to create a healthy, just, and sustainable society beginning by transforming higher education. The ACUPCC is a signature program of Second Nature, which also directs programs in financing, capacity-building, and climate resilience.
The ACUPCC is a partnership of nearly 700 colleges and universities in every state and the District of Columbia who have committed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and prepare students through research and education to solve the challenges of the 21st century.
