Company Description and Sustainability Profile:

Siemens is a global powerhouse focusing on the areas of electrification, automation and digitalization and is one of the world’s largest producers of energy-efficient, resource-saving technologies. Siemens Building Technologies Division is the North American market leader for energy-efficient and environment-friendly buildings and infrastructures. As a technology partner, services provider, and systems integrator, Siemens has offerings for building automation, heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC), energy management, distributed energy systems, and micro-grid controls, as well as fire, safety, and security solutions. For Higher Education, Siemens often incorporates sustainability education and workforce development programs toward the triple bottom line objectives of their partner institutions.

Siemens is committed to their sustainability mission, both internally and on behalf of their customers. They are a recognized global sustainability leader that engineers and implements energy technologies and solutions, as well as embraces sustainable practices. Siemens has been listed on the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) for sixteen consecutive years as a result of their business programs and results. In 2015, Siemens was named a DJSI Super-sector Leader for Industrial Goods & Services. Also in 2015, they received a perfect 100 out of 100 possible points in the Carbon Disclosure Leadership Index.

Siemens has reduced their carbon emissions by 24% and improved their fleet efficiency by 21% since 2008, while currently offsetting 20% of their electricity usage with renewable energy. Their building portfolio includes LEED, Energy Star and Green Globes certifications. Further, Siemens aims to be the world’s first major industrial company to achieve a net-zero carbon footprint. Siemens plans to cut their carbon dioxide emissions in half by as early as 2020. To achieve these goals, Siemens will invest over $130 million over the next three years in reducing the energy footprint of their production facilities and buildings. This will also include installation of distributed energy systems, employing low-emission fleet vehicles, and purchasing from clean energy sources.

Partnership Focus:

Second Nature and Siemens’ partnership will be explicitly solutions-centric and collaborative, based on a shared understanding of Siemens’ capacity and the Climate Leadership Network’s needs. Siemens’ expertise in the use and application of distributed energy systems for campuses, including decarbonized energy sources, directly aligns with signatory needs in all three of the Climate Leadership Commitments. We will develop new resources to inform campuses about this potential, assist them in decision-making, and ultimately lead to deployment.

Upcoming joint projects:

  • Regional Meeting on Distributed Energy (New England, Fall 2016)
  • Leadership Exchange – Second Nature presentation to Siemens’ team

Partner Voices: Why do you want to work with Second Nature and the Climate Leadership Network?

Siemens is pleased to partner with Second Nature and the Climate Leadership Network, which we view as leaders in the global climate challenge. Siemens embraces this challenge and believes that global business and higher education leaders must set a precedent as environmental stewards, as governments struggle to do so. Hence, we are both called upon as thought leaders and partners in responding to this mounting global challenge.

While we are proud of our internal sustainability accomplishments, we have made an even greater collective impact by assisting our customers in meeting their own sustainability objectives. This is an objective we share with Second Nature. Together we believe we help more campuses achieve greater climate performance, while showcasing commitment, advanced technical solutions and stakeholder engagement.
